Looking for Geological Perspective

Can anyone please tell me from geologist’s perspective what makes the the brown and green region separate class? Also, is there any documentation on those 9 class of sedimentary facies?

Thank you for sharing your observations from the dataset. I can see that you’ve got a good eye for detail, especially concerning the brown and green classes in the images.

From a geologist’s perspective, it appears that the brown region might have inclined fractures crossing the horizontally stratified siltstone, which might be indicative of a specific facies. The presence of inclined fractures in the brown region could suggest that this area is part of a structure-bound or fault-controlled facies, possibly related to an older structural element.

On the other hand, the green region without visible fractures might represent a more typical or reference facies, which could be used as a baseline for comparison. The lack of visible fractures in the green region might imply that this area was classified differently by the human interpreter.

Regarding your question about documentation on the 9 classes of sedimentary facies, we do not have any specific information on the classification system. However, we do have a great helper notebook from the Reflection Connection Challenge we ran in 2024 that discusses contrastive learning techniques for image classification tasks. This might be relevant to your observations, as the difference between the brown and green regions could potentially be learned by a machine learning model using contrastive learning.

It is probably a labelling error again. The labels for this competition are extremely bad in really many cases, even though some are good. I feel so bad for the one labeller who spend so much time making good labels while his/hers colleagues just didn’t give a F…

I consider leaving the competition even though im in 3’rd rigt now, simply because most of the labelling work is telling us that we are not worth spending time on…

Also that means that olive-green class (no 6) on image provided by @ abtahi6622 is geologically equivalent to same coloured classes in both core samples below (sample 13 and sample 14). Do I understand correctly?

That’s correct @Drewniacki the facies would be equivalent according to this classification scheme.
