Is the straight line segment a part of the solution as shown in the starter jupyter notebook. I cannot see it as a part of Figure 2 in the overview also as a red line in the starter jupyter notebook.

No, the straight line is not part of the solution, but you should include it in your submission as the scoring algorithm will be looking for it as context.
